The Mentor Scheme for Early Career Researchers Pilot Program has been established to:
- provide professional and collegial support for staff in the early stages of a research career to facilitate strategic career planning and career progress;
- pilot the Mentoring for VU Researchers Framework with Early Career Researchers to ensure that the Framework is an appropriate and effective tool for faculties, institutes, centres, service units and schools.
Purpose
- To pilot the Mentoring for VU Researchers Framework with Early Career Researchers to ensure that the Framework is an appropriate and effective tool for faculties, institutes, centres, service units and schools;
- To provide professional and collegial support for staff in the early stages of a research career to facilitate strategic career planning and career progress.
Duration
- 13 months (Oct 2009 – Nov 2010)
Important Dates
- Induction
- 26th October 2009, 9:30 am - 1:00 pm or
- 29th Oct 2009, 12:00 noon - 3:30 pm
- Mid-program forum 1 - 18th Feb 2010 (tbc)
- Mid-program forum 2 – 1st July 2010 (tbc)
- Conclusion and celebration - 8th Nov 2010 (tbc)
Eligibility
- Mentees
Early Career Researchers in HE, VE and FE defined as Academic and Educator staff who:
- intend to further their research career and profile
- have commenced their research career
- have completed a PhD or equivalent qualification/experience within the last five years
- feel that they could benefit from the support and guidance of a more experienced colleague
- Mentors
Established Researchers in HE, VE and FE defined as Academic and Educator staff (including alumni, adjuncts and recently retired staff) who:
- have established a research career and profile
- feel that they could offer support and guidance for a colleague in the early stages of a research career.
Selection Criteria
The program will be limited to a maximum of twenty matched pairs (ie. 20 mentees and 20 mentors). The following criteria will be used to select participants for the program
- Demonstrated commitment to the Program
- Professional aspirations
- Ability to find an appropriate match
- Diversity of staff from across the three employee groups (HE, VE, FE)
