VU is required to report research publications to DEEWR on an annual basis. This data contributes to VU's allocation of IGS and RTS funding. Neale Yates has primary responsibility for this return. The return is subject to external audit and Office for Research can only include publications which meet the DEEWR specifications and must be able to provide appropriate documentation to support this.

The HERD collection only includes publications which meet a quite narrow set of specifications within the following categories:
The University collects data on a much broader range of research publications and all research publications are include in the Research Bibliography. Participation in the reporting of the non-DEEWR categories is voluntary but encouraged. The research publication collection is administered by designated administrative staff in the Faculties, Schools and Research Centres.
